The author has done a good job with the 19th century language and the re imagining, but I'm wondering how I would feel about it if I wasn't an adult who has read Wuthering Heights(yes, in my teens, for English Lit). As an adult, I think that Cathy and Heathcliff deserve each other! Horrible people! But whether my teen students will enjoy Black Spring without having read the original, I don't know.
